Aqua Tower, a 250 Meters Wavering Building in Chicago
Friday, December 4th, 2009 at 04:31pm
Aqua Tower is yet another recent eye-catching building on the skylines of Chicago. The amazing project comes form Studio Gang Architects, a company located in the same city they had just changed drastically with this new construction. It is really nice to come across buildings that had a simple idea behind them and that have a design that can easily be drawn or reproduced and be easily[...]

Careful where You Post those Business Cards
Friday, December 4th, 2009 at 02:08pm
Get a load of this story A Brooklyn Heights small business owner faces thousands in fines — even though she only posted one thing on a Court Street lamppost. The owner of Sketch & Hammer, Susan Hager, freely admits that she taped an envelope containing 15 of business cards for her custom deck and garden design firm on that lamppost back in April. But that’s where it gets intere[...]

“The Villa” from Studio Daniel Libeskind
Friday, December 4th, 2009 at 02:04pm
This is what “twisted architecture” should actually be about: great looking buildings with completely unexpected angles and creative approaches. “The Villa” comes from Studio Daniel Libeskind, a company with offices in USA as well as in Europe. Here are some words from the architects’ website concerning this project: ” The Villa cre[...]

Hallways and Entrances- A Few Inspiring Ideas
Friday, December 4th, 2009 at 06:50am
I’ve heard a lot of couples complaining about decorating their homes. But what was surprising, was the fact that they were not so much worrying about how their bedroom would look like, but they were rather confused about the hallways and living-room, as these are the places where they would welcome their guests. Which, if you think about it, makes perfect sense. This is why for today we [...]

The interior decoration was planned by Emmanuel Briffa who commissioned Kenneth Hensley Holmden to paint eight Art Deco style murals for the theatre.I don't have any pictures of the theatre because having been badly damaged by fire in 1989 it was subequently purchased by Concordia University and de[...]

Why Use Buses When Trains Cost So Much More?
Friday, December 4th, 2009 at 03:00am
Whenever the Antiplanner reads a news story such as this one, which tells how Amtrak’s Boston-to-Portland Downeaster train hit an automobile, I think, “There were only 48 people on that train. We’re subsidizing a train to carry just 48 people?” Flickr photo by lazytom. While the route of the Downeaster is 116 miles, it is considered a [...]

Barbara, Patron Saint of Architects
Thursday, December 3rd, 2009 at 08:00pm
I'm not a Catholic, but it's still nice to honor December 4 because it's the feast day of Saint Barbara. According to Catholic beliefs, the martyred Barbara offers special protection for architects and stone masons because her troubled life included imprisonment in a tower. Barbara isn't the only patron saint for architects, however. Saints Bernward and Thomas the Apostle have [...]

Book Review: Depending on Time
Thursday, December 3rd, 2009 at 01:45pm
Depending on Time by Jennie SavageSafle, 2009Paperback, 152 pagesCardiff, the capital of Wales, has a compact city center but an abundance of 19th-century shopping arcades. These Victorian and Edwardian passages are memorable and give the city a strong sense of place, something that isn't particularly embraced by most contemporary developments (HOK Sport's Millennium Stadium, Wales Mille[...]

Alexander's Gates
Thursday, December 3rd, 2009 at 01:17pm
One of many books I've been enjoying this autumn is On Monsters by Stephen T. Asma, an extended look into where formal deviation occurs in the world and what unexpected, often emotionally disconcerting, shapes and forces can result. [Image: The Dariel Pass in the Caucausus Mountains, rumored possible site of the mythic Alexander's Gates].According to Asma, measuring these swerves and abn[...]

The Ribbon Stairs : Beautiful or Dangerous ?
Thursday, December 3rd, 2009 at 10:22am
Czech architecture firm HSH architects created this ribbon staircase for a home in Prague out of 10mm thick sheet metal. Pairs of adjoining steps connected with an oblique external side joist form a bracket anchored in the wall. Each of the brackets is constructed as a rigid frame. The higher steps bear mainly drawing forces, while pressure is transmitted through the lower steps. The concept of a [...]
